Family Support
As well as Relationship Counselling and Family Mediation, Relationships Scotland supports a variety of other family support services: Child Contact Centres, Groups for adults and Groups for children.
Child Contact Centres
• Supported Contact:
• Supervised Contact:
• Child Contact Centres
The first Child Contact Centres were opened in Scotland in 1988. Family Mediation Lothian and One Parent Families Scotland were the first to provide the service. Since then there has been an expansion in the number of Centres. Currently, there are 38 established Scottish Child Contact Centres that are run by a variety of voluntary organisations. Find the child contact centre in your area with contact details and opening hours. A full downloadable Child Contact Directory is available.
In-Centre
Supervision of the venue, while supporting the exchange of the child from one parent to the other and supporting the contact when necessary. Information on interactions before, during or after the contact is not recorded, unless it is a child protection or health and safety issue. A record of attendance is kept and an attendance report can be provided upon request (There may be an administration charge for attendance reports.)
Hand-over
Using a Child Contact Centre as a venue to “pick up” and “drop off” children for contact. Staff support the exchange of the child from one parent to the other. Please refer to In-Centre contacts (above) regarding record keeping.
Supervised Contact:
A provision identified in situations where contact takes place in the constant presence of a trained person with the direct responsibility to observe and ensure the safety of those involved. There is a cost for this service.
All centres operate to a Scottish Code of Policy and Procedures and are affiliated with the Scottish Association of Child Contact Centres (SACCC). The Scottish Child Contact Centre Development Officer (SCCCDO) distributes and maintains a Directory, Training Programme and a Handbook for staff and volunteers, as well as developing and supporting Child Contact Centres throughout Scotland.
