Family Support
As well as Relationship Counselling and Family Mediation, Relationships Scotland supports a variety of other family support services: Child Contact Centres, Groups for adults and Groups for children.
Child Contact Centres
The first Child Contact Centres were opened in Scotland in 1988. Family Mediation Lothian and One Parent Families Scotland were the first to provide the service. Since then there has been an expansion in the number of Centres. Currently, there are 42 established Scottish Child Contact Centres that are affiliated to Relationships Sotland and are run by a variety of voluntary organisations. All 42 centres operate to the same Code of Practice, guidelines and policies and procedures. The Scottish Child Contact Centre Development Officer (SCCCDO) distributes and maintains a Directory, Training Programmes and a Handbook for staff and volunteers, as well as developing and supporting Child Contact Centres throughout Scotland.
Call Relationships Scotland on 0845 119 2020 to find the Child Contact Centres in your area, or search in Find a Service (the blue boxes to the left of this text) to find the telephone number for the service nearest you. There is a list below of which areas in Scotland have Child Contact Centres.
In-Centre
A child contact centre provides a child-friendly environment for children to meet and spend time with a parent or other family member. A member of staff will accompany the child when going to and from the contact. Parents do not have to meet each other. A record of attendance is kept and an attendance report can be provided upon request. There may be a charge for this service and/or for attendance records.
Hand-over
A child contact centre can be used as a beginning and/or ending point for contacts that take place out of the centre. A member of staff will accompany the child when going from one parent (or other family member) to the other before and after the contact. Parents do not have to meet each other. A record of attendance is kept and an attendance report can be provided upon request. There may be a charge for this service and/or for attendance reports.
A supervised contact takes place in the constant presence of a contact supervisor with the direct responsibility to observe a contact and intervene if and when required. Parents do not have to meet each other. Reports can be provided upon request. There may be a cost for this service and/or for reports
